The talk talk hacking case links to the  hypodermic needle model as it is an example of the mass media creating a powerful effect as people are influenced and believe  what the media says.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

The two-step flow model was created after the hypodermic needle model was criticised for being to simplistic and suggesting everyone responds to media in the same way. The two-step flow model suggests that audiences are influenced by 'opinion leaders' in the media  and audiences respond to how the opinion leaders react to media texts.

2) How does this YouTube blogger fit into the two-step flow model?

This youtube blogger fits into the two-step model as his channel is based on trying and reviewing makeup products and because he as such a large following, his audience will base their opinions of the products solely on his review as an opinion leader. If he gave a good review about a product, his audience will trust his opinion and may buy the product. However, if he gave a bad review his audience will be less likely to try the same product due to the negative review.

3) How this this Telegraph feature on Britain's most popular tweeters fit the two-step flow model? Do you think these accounts genuinely have an influence over their audience?

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points.

Diversion : Fifty Shades of grey - some people may immerse themselves in particular types of media to compensate for the lack of satisfaction in their daily lives. Some may read this text to make up for the lack of romance or satisfaction in their relationships.

Personal relationships : Eastenders - some may develop affection or emotional connection with characters, for example some people may relate to a family from Eastenders and create and emotional connection with some characters.

personal identity: Facebook- this allows people to portray or modify their identity in the way they want to present their identities to the wider world in a way they can control.

surveillance: BBC News provides information useful for living and issues that may affect them and allow people to form an opinion on particular issues

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?

I agree that audiences rely on the media for many things, most importantly for information that helps them in their day to day lives and news that people should be aware of. People also have become dependent on the media as an escape from the real world for entertainment and humour .

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?

The growth in digital technology as significantly increased people's dependency on the media, for instance, the media has created a variety of new jobs for people and if the media had not developed people would not have had these jobs. Businesses also rely on media for promotion, recruitment, efficiency etc.

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and well being? Why?

Personally, i think the media has an overall positive impact on my life as it is makes many things easier such as research, communicating with people, finding out about news, entertainment etc. Media allows you to access information of all sorts and in terms of health ,there are many health and well being websites that provide information from specialists and doctors ,However, social media can have a negative impact on ones health in terms of self esteem when they compare themselves to instagram models and influencers.
