Narrative

Image
1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  The film Wallace and  Gromit in the curse of the were rabbit uses Todorov's narrative structure as in the beginning there is a problem that needs solving, the hero t ries to resolve this complicated dilemma but it fails which further complicates the problem which leads to the climax of the film. 2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a  clip  on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot. This clip communicates to the audience that there is a lot of death, romance and betrayal in the narrative of this TV series. It suggest who the main characters are and there importance. The symbols of the horses and blood suggest that there will be death. The crow...

LR

WWW: I really enjoyed looking at your blog – your semiotics work is very good with a range of excellent examples alongside a thoughtful analysis of the short film English. If we can maintain this level then I’m confident we’ll be aiming for the top grades! I also like your use of highlighted media terminology and the choice of the Nike gender advert (which has plenty of potential meanings). EBI: There is a concern here over your missing work – the opening 10 questions – and your Reception theory blog post which is unfinished. I imagine your 10 questions may well be in drafts which we can fix quickly but try and avoid leaving questions unfinished as you have with Reception theory. That final question is also a very important one – the ability to evaluate theories and form your own opinions is crucial in A Level Media – e.g. do you agree with Stuart Hall’s idea that texts all have multiple meanings?  LR: Update your blog to make sure all work is fully completed and posted. ...

MIGRAIN: Genre

Read Media Fact sheet  03 - Genre: Categorising texts and answer the following questions: 1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? Visual iconographies are important as they indicate the genre of the film to the audience and gives a hint of what the film is might be about. For instance, someone sitting behind a desk will not indicate the genre alone, however with the combination of this and high-key lighting, a modern mise-en-scene and a screen behind the characters will suggest the genre is news broadcast. 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre? Genre can also be identified by the narrative by the structure of the storytelling and the events and occurrences withing the story. For instance, in a sit-com you would not expect to see very dramatic and emotional scenes like a villainous boss, rather you would see more lighthearted comedy where the boss is presented as foolish. 3) What...

Reception Theory

1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the adverts you have studied ? I think the preferred reading of the creator is for the audience to recognise the celebrity used in the advert and think that because the celebrity is endorsing the brand that they should buy from the business. However i think the preferred reading of the quote is to  be proud of who you are and work hard to become who you want or aspire to be. The oppositional reading might be that Reebok is setting a negative stereotype of black men as 50 cent is known for being shot 12 times and being involved in criminal activity in the past but has changes. The oppositional reading suggests that all black men are the same and they cannot change. The preferred meaning of creator is to promote and encourage competition of men and women as this will make them take part in more sports. This will then make the audience buy sports wear from Nike and take part in the competit...
